It is Rockcote’s goal to be the first fully sustainable and then regenerative company on the planet by the year 2016. By sustainability we mean: “A dynamic process which enables all people to realise their potential and to improve their quality of life, in ways that simultaneously protect and enhance the earth’s life support systems". With the current state of technology, it is not possible to achieve this goal. However, we do have a set of principles to guide us and a process for moving us closer to our goal. The principles are derived from Biomimicry, modeling our business systems & manufacturing processes on natural living systems. With the concept of Biomimicry too guide us we can begin our journey by taking “small green steps". Of course, along with the small green steps we need to make major innovations and breakthroughs, such things as the recent successful development of our EcoStyle range of zero VOC environmentally friendly paints and texture coatings. The next steps will be to eliminate the VOC’s from the tinters we use to achieve our colours and then to remove the VOC’s from our external product range. There are a number of major breakthroughs required if we are to become a fully sustainable company. These include… •Finding a resin that comes from a renewable resource derived from biomass that will replace our current product, which is a by product of the oil industry. •Finding a more environmentally friendly replacement for Titanium Dioxide, the white pigment used in all paints. •Developing bio-degradable packaging. However while researching the major issues there are many “small green steps” we can be taking: Educate and inform our staff, suppliers, customers and the community about sustainable practices & facilitate dialogue and discussion amongst all groups. •Promote sustainable technologies through our own business. •Reduce and then eliminate waste. •Reduce and then eliminate harmful emissions into the atmosphere. •Reduce energy usage and begin using energy from renewable resources. •Create a new model for business that fosters the growth of people within the business and does not destroy the environment. •Set goals in each area for what we want to achieve. •Reduce the consumption of raw materials, reusing and recycling wherever possible. •Collaborate and cooperate with other organizations to promote sustainable practices. •We will give preference to doing business with socially responsible, quality suppliers. We will take a proactive approach to environmental issues not waiting for but moving ahead of government regulations which are usually misguided and ineffectual at best. We believe that sustainable business practices are good for the people within the company, the environment, the community and the profitability of the company. R.B.
