Gold Coast Transition Town initiative calls on Scenic Rim expertise

Community leaders and activists from the Southern Gold Coast are starting a series of workshops in early December to develop a Transition Town initiative for that region. Here in the Scenic Rim, the Tamborine Mountain community is one of the first in the world to develop an energy descent plan (EDAP) to help guide it towards a low carbon/high prosperity future. One of the Tamborine Mountain Transition founders, Shane Heaton, is assisting the Southern Gold Coast in its Transition efforts.

The Tamborine Mountain transition initiative is aligned with the world-wide Transition Network. There are now hundreds of Transition communities around the world, each seeking to inspire, catalyse and support community responses to peak oil and climate change. The Transition Network is positive and solutions-focused, and is developing a diversity of tools for building resilience and happiness around the world. From awareness-raising and local food groups to creating local currencies and developing “Plan Bs” for their communities, Transition groups seek to embrace the end of the Oil Age as being a tremendous opportunity for a profound rethink of much that we have come to take for granted.

On Monday December 5, the inspiring documentary about the Transition Town movement “In Transition” will be screened at the Gold Coast Arts Centre as part of the Life Changing Docos program. Scenic Rim sustainability practitioners Shane Heaton (founder of the Tamborine Mountain Transition Network) and Sally MacKinnon (Ethos Foundation) will be part of a panel of speakers to discuss the Transition Movement following the movie.

Both Shane and Sally will also contribute to the first Southern Gold Coast Transition Planning Workshop on Saturday December 10 at Gecko House.
